Joey Hearts You!

Joey Powling

Welcome to Joey Hearts You - a page created for you to share in Joey Powling's journey.

Joey was born with Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF). TOF is also known as "blue baby syndrome," as many babies who suffer from it are born blue or can turn blue at any time due to a lack of oxygen being pumped to their lungs. This can also cause difficulty breathing. There are 4 components to this condition that affected Joey. They all stem from a very random heart defect where one of the muscles in his heart grew a little bit crooked instead of straight up and down when it formed during the 5th week of pregnancy.

Joey had open heart surgery on October 25, 2012 to repair this condition, and although he may need 1 more surgery to complete this, he will be just fine, and he won't have any restrictions. Five days after his surgery, he was recovering so well that a picture was taken of him smiling with his incision scar. This picture then went viral, receiving over 1 million likes in just a few days and causing many people to become interested in Joey's story.

Because Joey now has so many followers, it is very important that this be used as an opportunity to spread awareness about TOF, as well as other heart defects. So many children are born with congenital heart disease, and the world needs to know that it is common and it can be treated. With the proper medical attention, many children can grow up to live normal lives. Joey wants you to know that it will be okay.

If you feel like making a donation to Joey, he is giving away TOF awareness bracelets for every $5 donation. One is red and says, "Joey Hearts You - TOF Awareness," and the other is blue and says, "Don't Turn Blue Get a Clue - TOF Awareness." You can check out the pay pal donation link for more info. Please follow the special instructions if you would like bracelets in return and specify which kind(s) you would like. You can write to joeyheartsyou@yahoo.com with any questions about the bracelets or if you would like to e-mail Joey words of encouragement. Also, check out Joey Hearts You on Facebook, as that is where many current updates are given.

Joey and his parents are very appreciative of all of this attention and support. They would especially like to thank Joey's surgical team at Boston Children's Hospital, including, his surgeon, Dr. Pigula and his cardiologist, Dr. Geggel. They would also like to thank his pediatrician, Dr. Dubner from Greater Lowell Pediatrics. Thank you to Matt Tassone for liking his picture enough to post it, and thank you to Dan Phelps for liking his picture enough to write about it in the Lowell Sun. And a special big thanks to Joey's family and friends!
